IPL Therapy
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy offers a safe, effective, and long-lasting solution to persistent dry eyes. At our Woodburn optometry clinic, we use state-of-the-art IPL technology to treat the underlying causes of dry eye—especially Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)—rather than just the symptoms.
What Is IPL Therapy?
IPL therapy uses gentle pulses of light to reduce inflammation, unclog blocked oil glands, and restore normal tear film function. This quick, non-invasive treatment can dramatically improve comfort, clarity, and long-term eye health.
Benefits of IPL Therapy
There are many benefits to IPL Therapy which include:
Reduces inflammation around the eyelids
Improves Meibomian gland function
Provides long-lasting relief from burning, watering, and irritation
Minimizes dependence on artificial tears
Helps treat ocular rosacea and eyelid redness
What To Expect During Treatment
Sessions are fast—typically 10–15 minutes—and most patients describe the sensation as mild and comfortable. During an appointment for IPL treatment, we begin by applying a cooling gel and specially designed shields to protect your eyes. We then hold the IPL device to your skin to administer flashes of light, which may feel warm.
A full treatment plan usually includes a series of sessions spaced a few weeks apart for the best results. There is no downtime, and most patients notice improvement within the first few visits. Your initial IPL treatment for dry eye is typically 4-6 sessions. Once completed, your doctor will recommend what maintenance plan is right for you but typically is every 3–9 months thereafter.
Who Is A Good Candidate?
IPL therapy is ideal for patients with:
Chronic dry eye
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
Eyelid inflammation or redness
Ocular rosacea
If artificial tears, warm compresses, or medications haven’t provided enough relief, IPL may be the next step.
